2. Mushrooms From Coffee Grounds? From ABC News we read of Life Cykel – an interesting Fremantle initiative that is recycling coffee grounds to grow oyster mushrooms, supplying local restaurants and households.
“WA’s first urban mushroom farm [is] using coffee grounds to grow the fungi…diverting three tonnes of coffee waste from landfill.”
LifeCykel (Danish spelling) have also developed an intriguing home mushroom growing kit, available online (see below). A great learning opportunity for young people and classrooms…
3. Inspiring Worm-Farming… Compost Network recently visited the Co-Abundance permaculture and organic olive grove enterprise in SAs mid-north where we were excited to see a larger-scale worm farm set-up. Colin has 7 large farms set up in the shade of a grove of enormous trees, recycling most of the households organic waste (including shredded paper!) The castings and liquid generated are used to feed a variety of ingenious ‘wicking’ garden beds (see below). Inspiring work!
